Cognos Error PRS-CSE-1258: Problem encountered during verification of session capability information.

Users go into Cognos portal but get an error message saying 'PRS-CSE-1258: Problem encountered during verification of session capability information'. And you have already googled for it, haven't you? All you can find is some IE tab related nonsense that does not really help? Are you running a multi-server environment? Well, it might just be that one of your servers has gone nuts!

Shut down all cognos services on all servers and start bringing them up again- one at a time. Check to see if your environment is responding without the error after each service is running again. One of them is going to be your snake for sure. Once you've found the guilty server, stop cognos service on it again. Now your environment should be functional again.

On the problem machine, while it is still idle, open Cognos Configuration and export the config to a decrypted file. Close Cognos Configuration. Backup and delete following files:
- c8_location/configuration/cogstartup.xml
- c8_location/configuration/caSerial
- c8_location/configuration/cogconfig.prefs
- c8_location/configuration/coglocale.xml
And folders:
- c8_location/configuration/csk
- c8_location/configuration/encryptkeypair
- c8_location/configuration/signkeypair

Replace cogstartup.xml with the decrypted export that you've done (make sure the name is the same). Start Cognos Configuration. Ignore the warning message about blank config if you get it. Click save button. Cryptographic information has just been re-generated. You can now start the service again. All should be fine from now on. Until next time...

Not entirely sure why PRS-CSE-1258 has only user or IIS related comments from IBM technotes. Reality is that sometimes you can get this error because of server-side issues (in multi-server environments, at least). Messed up encryption keys is one of the possibilities not mentioned out in the open for some reason. All you need to do is regenerate them.
