CFG-ERR-0103 Unable to start IBM Cognos 8 service

If you get an error message while starting up Cognos 8 service and it says: "CFG-ERR-0103 Unable to start IBM Cognos 8 service. Execution of the external process returns an error code value of '-1'." all you need to do is to make sure the service is not disabled.

Go into Control Panel/Services and locate the Cognos service. Make sure it is not set to Disabled. If it is- change to Automatic and try starting up again.

This change you said does not correct the problem. You just changed the service to autorun when it's stopped.

Hi Rafhael,
Might just be that you are correct- it may be that there are more possible causes raising this error message.

However, if the Cognos service is set to Disabled, you will be getting this error message during startup via Cognos Configuration because OS will actively prohibit the startup.

Sure, it is not necessary to change to Automatic- Manual should work just as well, but who would want to start up the service manually anyway?

What was the solution to your problem?

Ok ok, but change to automatic start cognos service has nothing to do with CFG-ERR-0103.

I'm still finding information about this problem. IBM support told me that is a generic error, that could happen in many cases. So, the only thing I can do is reanalyze my installation.

IBM portal has many docs about this problem, none solved mine.
